ABOUT

Rock solid rhythm guitarist with an excellent ear. I can pick up songs quickly and can easily identify when things aren't quite right. I can do lead if 'encouraged' but that's not my preference, happy to do fills. I'm capable of playing difficult rhythm songs, ie. with unusual chords, and enjoy the challenge of learning them.

I believe the more songs a band knows, the better for everyone, including the punters. I practice a lot when asked to learn songs and don't treat band rehearsal as my time to learn the songs, it's a time to put into practice what you've worked on through the week.

I have a playlist of 'Songs I'd Like To Cover In A Band', some of which I've listed below. Not your usual cover band selection, I realise:
Jaimme's Got A Girl - You Am I
Cathy's Clown - You Am I
September Gurls - Big Star
Get Off - Dandy Warhols
Pure - Lightning Seeds
Happy Birthday - Concrete Blonde
The One I Love - REM
Imitation Of Life - REM
Boys Don't Cry - The Cure
I'm Bored - Iggy Pop
Bittersweet - Hoodoo Gurus
There Is A Light That Never Goes Out - The Smiths
Before Too Long - Paul Kelly
Suburban Boy - Dave Warner
Rattlesnakes - Lloyd Cole
Bye Bye Pride - Go-Betweens
Streets Of Your Town - Go-Betweens
Man Overboard - Do Re Mi
Message To My Girl - Split Enz

Influences

Late 70s/early 80s Aussie music is awesome, plus I really like more melodic alternative guitar such as The Smiths, REM and Teenage Fanclub. I learned to play listening to my sister's classic 70s rock (T.Rex, Alice Cooper) before moving on to Metallica. I like guitar-based pop/rock that's short and sweet, not so much the long solo-laden classic stuff.

Stuff I like the most is 70s and 80s chart pop (typical cover band stuff), and guitar based 90s Triple J stuff.

Guitar players I like are mostly because of their subtlety - Brian May, Johnny Marr, Mark Knopfler, Alex Chilton. I do also like Jimmy Page but that's in large part to his interesting rhythms.
