Hey! My name’s Megumi but I usually go by Meg. I’m a twenty-two year old Canberra local who loves to sing!

I started taking singing lessons at the age of ten and participated in my school choir. I also did gigs around Canberra with the Turner Trebles, a choir formed by Tobias Cole from Opera Australia with students from my school. He pushed us very hard but I’m grateful for that early disciplinary vocal education!

I never learnt to read music properly as my autism kept me very distracted, but I am hoping to amend this in the coming years. I have dabbled in piano and guitar but as I also have cerebral palsy it’s been hard for me to tackle. I hope to amend this too as I really do want to learn. I would also love to learn how to produce on Logic Pro but I have the same setbacks as mentioned above. I’m currently in my first year of study for a Bachelor of Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Canberra.

I am a very keen songwriter, writing songs since I was twelve. For a lot of my childhood music was my escape, as my conditions kept me needing constant medical monitoring (non-severe and procedural, usually updates and annual check-ins), along with multiple surgeries, which significantly impacted my schooling especially in early high school. My singing training continued at the Bec Taylor School of Music as well as private lessons despite the fact it was a constant struggle to practice and concentrate!

I was very stubborn as a child and always insisted on singing my own songs and still wish to do so, but now as an adult I have turned my attention to working on improving my songwriting craft. I would love to write for other singers as a source of income. I dream to release my own songs one day too. I guess you could say I have many ambitions but I am taking it one day at a time.

I have a very eclectic taste in music! I love American soul music and gospel, from classics like Sam Cooke, Al Green and Stevie Wonder. My father is Japanese and my earliest memories are listening to Japanese 70s’ folk tunes and The Beatles. My favourite all time artists are The Beatles, David Gray, The Kinks, Simon and Garfunkel, Van Morrison, Janis Ian, Takuro Yoshida, Yumin, ABBA, The Police, The Cranberries, Alanis Morissette Jewel, Dido, Paul Kelly, Missy Higgins, Adele, Amy Winehouse, Ed Sheeran, George Ezra, Del Water Gap, RAYE, Olivia Dean, Olivia Rodrigo, Gracie Abrams, Maisie Peters, Griff, sombr and Shakira. Essentially, everything from the ‘50s onwards. A current highlight for me is Canberra’s very own Lucy Sugarman.

My least favourite genre: I listen to everything except heavy metal and hard rock. Too noisy for me but I still respect them!
