ABOUT

I am not sure I would use the word musician to describe myself as it creates a certain expectation. I enjoy playing with the sounds generated by the strings on the guitar, especially the relationship between touch and sound. I don't believe I have a musical ear, but I have a kind of feel for sound as temporary form. I am looking for someone to learn with, and from. As an educator I am acutely aware of peer to peer learning. I have had many guitar teachers over many years and they all have one failing in common: they do not encourage students to learn through application by developing their own material. I learn through application and would like to collaborate with someone to develop original material simply for the pleasure of creating something in sound. I am at the point where I know I can learn more from a collaborator than from teachers.

Influences

I won't drop names or music types except to say that I am drawn to music that eschews its conventions i.e. pushes boundaries. I am not saying I can play this kind of music as it is very difficult to do so without formal training, but I am inspired by innovators and visionaries in any genre of music. In this sense, I do not play other peoples music. I have no interest in doing covers as this process is devoid of creative originality and invention. I recognise that whatever I play carries citations of all that I have heard and that is enough to build a sound that I feel and hear in my own way. I should say that I do listen to popular music (but not mainstream) and believe that good singer songwriters are a special breed (I cannot sing) and at the top end, they are literate aural poets.
