Cantorion Sydney Male Voice Choir is seeking to engage a new Musical Director to commence in February 2022.
The choir was founded in 2006 in the tradition of Welsh male voice choirs. The choir’s repertoire is comprised mainly of classical music written for male voice ensembles as well as folk music and sacred works. There are currently approximately 35 active members, with a range of musical abilities, although few can read music, all can sing in tune and are keen to learn their parts. There is no formal audition process. There is a regular accompanist.
Cantorion has performed in music festivals including Welsh Gymanfas and at weddings, dinners, charity fundraisers and conferences. Cantorion has performed at many concerts throughout Sydney, from Mona Vale to Bundeena to Windsor, and has also sung further afield in Yass, Nowra, Glenbrook and Dubbo. Plans for concerts in 2022, including a tour to Tamworth and Glen Innes, are well advanced.
Practice takes place in St Peters Presbyterian Church in North Sydney close to North Sydney station on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:45.
The principal responsibilities of the music director are to:-
• Select music for the choir in consultation with the Committee.
• Take charge of practices and performances.
• Be responsible for the presentation standard of public performances.
• Visit potential venues to assess suitability for either performances or rehearsals.
• Select soloists as required.
The successful applicant will demonstrate the ability to:-
• Competently undertake the responsibilities of the Music Director.
• Bring the choir to a high standard of musicianship.
• Work with singers of a range of abilities, from competent soloists to beginners.
• Select concert repertoire items appropriate for the members and the audience.
