Hey! I’m James. I’m primarily a fiddle player, but I also have skills across cello, keys, banjo and guitar. I’m also vision impaired, which I’ll explain further below.
But first, I have a 20+ year history of violin, particularly folk genres. I am also classically trained and hold a bachelor’s degree in violin from UNE in Armidale NSW, I am extremely comfortable improvising on this instrument. I also have a jazz degree with Hons from VCA in Melbourne majoring on piano, which also translates to my fiddle and Cello playing. Alongside these formal qualifications, I have played in countless singer songwriter, jazz, bluegrass and rock bands over the last 15 years, and I have played in the same trad-Irish band for 10+ years as the dedicated fiddle player.
I am vision impaired. This means I can’t read sheet music anymore, however I used to be able to and I understand the theory. Since losing my sight I have focused more on my improvising and aural skills. I promise I will surprise you with how quick I can slot in to anything on fiddle, and with how quickly I can learn melodies. My vision impairment does mean I don’t drive a car, but am capable of travelling on PT with my guide dog Levi, and also if it is a recorded part you’re after, I have a home studio.
I’m looking for fun bands to play in with good people. I’ll happily slot in for your fiddle player in a bluegrass/jazz band if they are away, or if you are a professional band seeking a dedicated and hardworking member I would love to show what I can do. I also have much experience working with singer songwriters and feel very comfortable in that world.
