Backseat Mafia
2020 was a watershed year for Golden Fang. They released their fourth album, were featured on Backseat Mafia, the AU review and international websites, and their singles received community radio airplay across Australia. It was the culmination of their work across their previous albums and found them firing on all cylinders, both as songwriters and musicians.
Fast forwarding through the frustrations of an international pandemic, the band harnessed the momentum of that album and a handful of live shows and kicked on into the writing of the songs that comprise their new album Man With Telltale Scars.
The album sees Golden Fang finding new and fascinating ways to navigate modern rock music. Their trademark rock 'n' roll swerve and swagger remains intact, draped in widescreen melancholic melodies that gives these eight songs a kind of bruised sonic romanticism.
Teo Treolar and Carl Redfern's guitars have the freedom to cross borders into ragged punk and restrained, atmospheric post rock. There are jangling chord changes, electrically charged skyward solos and sublime textural treatments from Treloar in particular. The angularity of Fugazi collides in beautiful unison with the more experimental freewheeling sounds of Sonic Youth and Swervedriver. The moodiness of The Cure is also apparent at times, while the willingness to explore a groove, or allow an idea to patiently evolve, puts them in the same league as Mogwai and The Drones.
Drummer Joe Parkins and bassist Justin Tauber provide the rhythmic architecture that allow the songs to blossom while Redfern's vocal is a distinct narrator throughout, the sound of his voice both demonstrative, possessing a knowing wink and capable of conveying a yearning emotionality.
