Creative drummer needed:

Our band Boat has recently reformed, minus our drummer who is living overseas. In our previous incarnation (over 20 yeras ago) we released 2 albums and demoed a bunch of songs that we never got to record professionally. The audio samples here feature one of our early recordings and songs from the albums.

The photos are also from way back.

Right now the band consists of Brett on bass, Cam on vocals/guitars and Yanai on vocals/guitars. Cam and Yanai each write and sing the songs. All our musical tastes are eclectic and we've all broadened each others' tastes.

As well as experimenting with arrangements for songs, we love improvised music. Something we did a bunch of times was perform improvised soundtracks for silent films, usually without seeing the film first (see poster).

Now that we're older and have more stable lives, we're enjoying getting together every few weeks at Brett's rehearsal studio in Reservoir, and slowly building confidence with the songs and playing together again. As the music comes together, we'll start making plans to gig and record again, but we're not in a hurry this time around.

We're seeking a creative drummer who is stylistically diverse. Someone who likes to experiment and try left of centre ideas, but also enjoys simple, straight ahead grooves when the song is asking for that.

We like to start rehearsals and gigs with a free jam which always goes in a different direction. Some of our songs have set arrangements which we tend to stick to, whereas others tend to change a bit each time we play them.

Influences

The most obvious comparison would probably be Wilco, as we are also a band that starts with a rootsy foundation and then takes it in different directions. But other music that we love that also bleeds into our songs includes: Radiohead, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Tool, The Shins, Vampire Weekend, Van Morrison's Astral Weeks, The Velvet Underground, Tom Waits, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Nick Drake, Brian Eno, Pavement, Thomas Mapfumo, Bjork, The Beatles, The Byrds, Allman Brothers, Charles Mingus, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, The Smiths, The Meters, Pixies.
