ABOUT

No idea how much info I’m supposed to put here so here’s most my story. Sorry if its long and boring!

49 year old Northern Beaches lad grew up in the glory days of Aussie rock over the 70's 80's and 90's. Small in height, big in voice, have basically zero music theory, sing from the ear and absolutely love the sound of good harmonies. Have a powerful voice when it gets cranking and can sing anything from hard rock to love songs, though fewer ballads now "the chords" are a bit older. Guess I’d describe my singing as not nearly perfect, but not completely terrible either? The pipedream has always been to perform a stadium rock concert and hear the crowd singing and screaming.

Got started by chance in Musical Theatre in year 9 when a friend dared/bet me to audition. To my absolute terror got the lead part, which grew into a love affair over the next 3 years. Got scouted at 17 while in school production and did some amateur opera, 'nuf said about that. Had way too many drinks one night, got false courage and sang Karaoke at DY RSL, got offered a job by the owner. Turned into shows all over Sydney 2-3 times a week for 5 years singing the first 20'ish songs while everyone built their own courage!

(cringe) Sidenote...don’t judge (hah!). Applied to a "boy band" at 21 (when Backstreet Boys, Nsync and Boyz2Men were massive) from a newspaper ad, got chosen with 4 others from hundreds of applicants. Thought this was the big break! Lost the path to stardom when the project suddenly shut down when funding was pulled by the major sponsor (completely overstated the stardom bit btw).

Took a break from singing to focus on IT career and one day secretly decided to have crack at the first Australian Idol, had no idea what it was at the time. Made top 100 and then got cut. That was the year with Guy Sebastian/Shannon Noll (let me be clear here, not near that level of talent). Everyone knew before it went live Guy would win, he was incredible. Too old to audition after that as cutoff was 30.

Started singing again at 35 after meeting a bunch of parent muso's at a drunken primary school event and slobbering on the small band while saying “I can sing!” (as you do?). Later jammed with them and we formed a Rock cover band. We were playing together until just yesterday with 4-6 gigs a year. Sadly band members got too busy, lost motivation or wanted a different direction (creative differences?). Was lead male singer and backup vocals (4 singers), doing it purely for the love as money from gigs was purely for equipment upgrades for the band. We did mostly 60's/70's/80's rock with a smattering of 90's/2000's.
Our performances started off with school socials, then house parties (mostly 40ths-60th's), multiple charity fundraisers (Humpty Dumpty), Northern Beaches Police events (drummer was a Copper), curtain raiser for the Mimosa Fireworks (last 8ish years) and St Ives Show (last 2 years).

Just started learning guitar, will take a couple of years to get to basic performance level though. ?

Exploring options for the next project, looking for something casual/relaxed/fun. Not interested in making an income from music as I own an IT business. Have an amazing and dedicated lead guitarist (electric/acoustic) close mate from the previous band that is also keen to explore whatever is next. Looking for something small as our last band was 7 and made for impossible logistics.

No expectations except for staying local, having fun, performing music I enjoy and the adrenaline rush, either privately or publicly. MUST be casual/fun with humble people that understand their own limitations. Have potential offer to do some local breweries/cafes with 2-4 performers, acoustic rock/pop kinda stuff. Have contacts from some previous gigs that may have opportunities, or happy to just busk in the park on a sunny day with a bit of prep!
