I am 71 and have been playing clarinet and sax for a number of years. I can read music but it takes me all day, and I can't sight-read to save my life - I play by ear. I was a late beginner and only had tuition in my 60s, so I can't play the fast and tricky stuff, but I can get some nice tones and effects. Over the past few years I have discovered that improvisation comes fairly naturally. I've performed (in various combos) at the Merimbula Jazz Festival for the past four years with small groups playing mostly pop songs, but more recently I've played in a small club and a Jazz Jam in Canberra, improvising over a number of Duke Ellington and Miles Davis pieces, and my performance was described as "delightful" by one of the waitresses! :-) I'm comfortable playing all sorts of genres, and I really enjoy playing in groups, but my preference would be for those magic Ellington tunes of the 1930-40s - Mood Indigo, Creole Love Call, the Mooch, Black & Tan Fantasy etc. Realising that I'm quite good at improvisation was quite a revelation - if only it had happened a few decades ago!
