I played synth in bands many years ago, and I also performed in avant garde, performance art type ensembles.
These days I tend to play and write predominantly on 12 string electric guitar heavily "effected". People say I play guitar like a keyboard player, which makes sense, given that it was the piano that I learnt to play as a child, and played synth/keyboard in my teens and 20s.
I didn't really start playing guitar seriously until in my 40s, and didn't go through the phase of learning all the classic guitar riffs. I don't play blues type riffs. In fact I really don't like blues, or bluesy rock.

Influences
I'm in my 50s, so I have decades of influences. In my youth I liked some of the mainstream rock/pop stuff, like Led Zeppelin, but I was mores in to Bowie, Mott the Hoople, Queen, New York Dolls, T Rex, etc. I like the showy, dress-up thing.
I was in a number of synth/pop bands in the 80s, and was very much in time New Romantic/Blitz scene, but at the more extravagant, showy end.
I love the Grunge era (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, etc), and I LOVE contemporary Hip Hop/Rap music.
Even more so I love electronic music, from my early passions of Yes, Genesis (the original band with Peter Gabriel), Pink Floyd, etc, through to the modern forms of techno, Ambient, Drum and Bass, Acid, Trance, Dubstep, etc.
Many, many influences, and I could go on, or I could just say I like anything EXCEPT Blues, Country, Jazz and 70s Disco. Unfortunately most of my age group, and most of the musicians in Katoomba, only what to play those genres. Aaaaarrrggghhh!
